Professional headshots are an essential tool for making a strong first impression, whether you’re updating your LinkedIn profile, building your brand, or refreshing your website. The key to a standout photo? A wardrobe that works for you. Here’s how to dress to impress for your next session.
Well-fitted clothing is crucial for a polished look. Avoid items that are too tight or too loose—tailored pieces photograph best. While fashion trends might be swinging to the “oversized” look, that doesn’t necessarily translate well for headshots. Also, consider fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily, like cotton blends, silk, or knitwear. This ensures your outfit looks crisp and clean, even under studio lights or after a commute.
Accessories should enhance your look, not distract from it. Simple jewelry, such as stud earrings or a delicate necklace, works well. If you wear glasses, ensure they’re clean and fit well on your face. If you are going for a classic company headshot, avoid flashy accessories or anything that takes attention away from your face. However, if these headshots are meant to show off personality, and your style is bold and flashy, a beautiful statement piece can help make your headshots pop. It’s really all about intention.
A few days before your session, try on your outfit and take a few test photos. This will help you spot any issues with fit, color, or fabric. Steam or iron your clothes, and bring backups to the shoot if you’d like, just in case. Please note – if your outfit is too wrinkled, please don’t count on us being able to “just photoshop” all the wrinkles out…. it’s not that easy + doesn’t always work. Being prepared will help you feel confident and at ease during your session.
